Changes to the 2016 CA Building Code
Presented by Mike Nearman – Deputy Executive Director and Gary Fabian – Associate Architect with California Building Standards Commission (CBSC) and Department of General Services (DGS)
Attendees will learn about deletions, additions and changes to the 2016 California Building Standards Code. Also covered will be a session on the proper use and understanding of the matrix tables at the front of most chapters in the Code.
This presentation will enable the attendee to:
- Better comprehend recent changes to the Code
- Be amore informed user of the Code, by making better use of the matrix adoption tables
- Gain quick and easy access to further information concerning the Code

About the Facilitators:
Mike Nearman; Deputy Executive Director
For more than a decade, Mike has been intricately involved in California’s code development and approval processes. He has gained a wealth of experience and knowledge concerning California’s building codes and regulatory rule making practices. He has been, and remains a key contributor to the development and maintenance of CAL Green, California’s first-in-the-nation Green Building Standards Code.
Gary Fabian; Associate Architect
Gary joined the CSBC as an Associate Architect in June 2016. Before moving to CBSC, he worked at the California Energy Commission (CEC). During his tenure with the CEC he developed educational materials for public use and conducted training with their education and outreach unit. Gary has been involved in the practice of architecture, with a focus on public works, since 1978. His nearly 40 years of industry experience includes architectural design, building commissioning and facilities bond programs.
